Best Buy Puts PS5 Purchases Behind a Paywall

Sony Interactive Entertainment

If you’ve tried to purchase a PlayStation 5, you know that it’s a struggle. Best Buy is trying to make getting a PS5 with its new yearly Totaltech membership a little easier, but it’ll cost you.

Best Buy’s New Totaltech Subscription

Even though the PlayStation 5 has been out for some time, you still can’t walk into your favorite retailer and buy one. You need to get creative if you want to take one home. However, Best Buy is looking to make it easier with its new Totaltech program.

Basically, for $200 per year, you can get access to many benefits. According to Best Buy, you’ll get tech support any time you need it, up to two years of protection on Best Buy purchases (which includes AppleCare+, which can cost around that much on its own), member-discounted prices, two-day shipping, extended return periods, and exclusive access to purchase “the season’s hardest-to-find products,” including game consoles like the PS5. There’s also free delivery and installation, which can help the subscription pay for itself.

According to Ars Technica, the program seems to be working as intended, as the disc-based PS5 was listed on Best Buy’s website, and it took almost two full hours to sell out, which is a considerable departure from sales to the general public, which usually only last a matter of minutes.

Is Totaltech Worth It?

Of course, it’s up to each person to decide whether access to limited items, warranties, and discounts is worth $200 per year. If you do use the program to get your hands on a PS5, $200 could be cheaper than what you’d pay a scalper to buy one from them, and you do get the other Totaltech benefits, so it’s not the worst idea.

Spending $200 for a subscription is not cheap, but if you use the program to snag a PS5 and get a TV delivered and installed, you should get your money’s worth.
